“Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language.” National Literacy Trust 2017.

Here at the The Southwater Infant Academy we use phonics to support us in growing confident readers and spellers. Our children achieve excellent results in their phonic screening checks and the teaching of phonics is continually reviewed and evaluated to ensure it is the best that it can be.


This year in Reception we are excited to be introducing ‘Song of Sounds’ As always with a phonics scheme we have made this our own, keeping the best bits of ‘Read Write Inc’, and ‘Letters and Sounds’ to create our own bespoke phonic scheme of work. The children learn the song in their first phonics lesson meaning that they are instantly exposed to all sounds to ensure a maximum progression.

Key Stage One

Following a successful year(s) using a combination of ‘Read Write Inc’ and ‘Letters and Sounds’ alongside our own phonics scheme of work, the children in Year’s One and Two will continue to learn in this way. They will continue to learn rhymes associated with each sound and handwriting pattern allowing them to differentiate between the different phonemes and graphemes. At the end of Year One, the children will sit the National Phonics Screening Check, this is a stress free assessment and is done 1:1 with your child’s class teacher.

In Year Two the children will continue to build on their phonic knowledge following the ‘Oxford Owl Read Write Inc’ Spelling Scheme. The order in which the sounds and spelling patterns are taught can be found here in our Progression In Phonics for KS1.
