World Book Day
Here at the infants we will be celebrating World Book Day for not only one day but the whole week beginning Monday 2nd March! We will be sharing our love of reading through a variety of classroom activities and events in school.
'Share a million stories’
The theme for this year’s WBD is ‘Share a Million Stories’. Reading for pleasure is in decline, so we want to boost it back up, raise awareness and spark the imaginations of all of our children. Therefore, we are inviting you to join this fun nationwide event to enjoy the pleasures of reading and SHARE A STORY for World Book Day… (and every day!)
Spending just 10 minutes a day reading and sharing stories with children can make a crucial difference to their outcomes and it is enjoyable for all involved. You can read together anywhere and everywhere, from breakfast to bedtime! In the park, on the train, on the sofa, on a plane – reading and sharing stories can happen anywhere at any time.
This year we need your help to SHARE A MILLION STORIES. During the month of World Book Day (Thursday 27 February to Sunday 29 March), we will be asking you to log how many stories you share together at home by colouring-in on a simple log. All children who take part will receive a certificate. We will then add your totals to the total number of stories shared at the academy and submit this total online. Please remember to continue writing in your child’s reading journal (or encourage them to write independently) alongside the WBD log to ensure they continue working towards their reading awards. If you are keen to take part in more WBD activities lots more can be found at https://www.worldbookday.com/
Events for World Book Day week
‘Share a bedtime story at school’
On Tuesday 3rd March from 6:15pm-7:15pm we are inviting you and your children to return to school to share a story with the teachers across the academy. The teachers will each be reading three of their favourite stories throughout the evening. You and your child can listen to any teacher in any classroom and siblings at the Infant Academy will have the opportunities to hear stories in both of their classes. Teachers will be reading at approximately 6:30pm, 6:45pm and 7:00pm. You will be able to stay for as many stories as you choose and there is no requirement to come for the full hour.
Scrumptious hot chocolate, warm blackcurrant and biscuits will available in the hall for a small donation and we invite the children to wear their pyjamas and bring their favourite cuddly toy too!
Books will be on sale for you and your child to purchase from Usborne Books in the staffroom throughout the evening. There will be a selection of fiction and non-fiction books to browse through with some paired to our term themes.
‘Dress up day as your favourite book character’ Thursday 5th March
Following tradition, we would like to invite the children to come to school dressed as their favourite book character for the day! Please ensure that this is a book character rather than a television or film character. If your child owns the book from which the character originates, we would encourage them to bring this story in to share with the class.
Please note there is no expectation that books or an expensive costume are purchased. We welcome creativity and homemade entries! There will be a winner and runner up from each year group and a costume parade for all of the children to participate in during assembly.
Usborne Books will again be joining us after school in the staffroom to offer those not attending on the 3rd a chance to browse.
‘Parent Readers’ Monday 2nd- Friday 6th March
If you have any free time during this week and you would be willing to share a favourite story from your childhood or perhaps a bedtime favourite from your household, please speak to your child’s class teacher to arrange a visit to their classroom. As this will be a one-off short visit and you will be accompanied by your child’s class teacher for the duration of the session, you will not be required to obtain a DBS certificate.
World Book Day vouchers
Please find attached a WBD voucher which your child can use to buy special edition £1 WBD books or get £1 off a full price book of their choice at participating retailers. These vouchers will be accepted by the Usborne Book’s on the 3rd and 5th March.
