Since September 2014, all pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 have been eligible for a free school meal at lunchtime. This offer does not depend on your household income or whether you receive any benefits – every child in these year groups is eligible to take up the offer.
The government has decided to fund free school lunches for all pupils in this age group, following the Department for Education's review of school food. In a trial, it was found that pupils who ate a high quality school lunch achieved better academically than those who did not. They were also more likely to eat healthier foods such as vegetables at lunchtime instead of less healthy foods such as crisps.
Parents in the trial appreciated saving the cost of school lunches (currently £2.35 per child per day or £446.50 per year) and not having to spend time preparing packed lunches.
We are expecting the majority of children to eat school lunches which are provided by The Easy Lunch Company, however in order for us to place an order for the correct number of lunches with our caterer, please complete the slip below and return it to the academy by 20 June. Please note that if your child has opted for hot meals but brings a packed lunch from home, we, as an academy will still be charged for this meal.
You should also be aware that under current restrictions due to Covid-19, we are offering cold lunches to the children to minimise the risk of infection. We anticipate that hot lunches will be possible again from September but this is dependent on future guidance from the government.
